The Bittersweetness of Diabetes

My personal journey through discovery, recovery, and overcoming

My symptoms were prevalent, but the disease was undiagnosed for nearly two years. After several months of unquenchable thirst, yeast infections, fatigue, and other symptoms, I turned twenty in 1971. That was the year I discovered that the rest of my life would be framed within the blood sugar range of 80-120. That was the year I began to become a lay-expert on controlling and manipulating my blood sugar level. That was the year I realized all the challenges I would be facing as I left college to make my way in the world were subject to my ability to triumph over this slippery disease-diabetes.

"Cheryl's resourcefulness and endless resolve in coping with her long struggle with a severe form of diabetes have resulted in a remarkable story of hope and inspiration. There is much to be learned from her approach to the daily challenges she faces. Humor is an important ingredient as well as always searching for workable solutions. All of this is expanded by the fact that she is legally blind and has a very active life despite that handicap. Be prepared to be inspired by her courage and attitude as well as being entertained by her unique style of writing."    ~Deloris Cox
